Cohen was the keynote speaker at December 2023’s NERC meeting where he gave a presentation about: A) The current state of the recovered paper markets; B) Trends regarding manufacturers that are transitioning from plastic packaging or other types of materials to paper-based solutions; and C) Examples of lightweighting and right-sizing of paper packaging.
Inside the Business of MRFs
Cohen moderates a session entitled ‘The Business of MRFs’ with an expert panel to explain that MRFs are a ‘for profit’ business and that model could be at risk if we keep confusing the consumer with self-serving recycling labels by brands and trade organizations which ultimately contaminate the recycling stream and are bad for the business.
A Fresh Look at OCC Recycling
Cohen’s presentation challenges the industry’s ‘claim’ that we have over a 90% recycling rate for cardboard in the U.S. In collaboration with Bloomberg Intelligence, Cohen’s detailed analysis has been applauded by industry leaders and this presentation was followed up with a top 10 article for all of 2022 in Resource Recycling’s email newsletter, and it became a cover story in the February 2023 edition of Recycling Today magazine.
